Symbolism, Use, and Knowledge of Birds in Tibetan Communities of China

Abstract Birds are valued in the traditional cultures of Tibetan areas China for symbolism, spirituality, and medicine. A total 329 informants from six communities were interviewed through ethnobiological survey methods. Results highlight that value a diversity birds multiple symbolic purposes including good harvest, happiness, fortune, beauty, glory, omens. Over 20 avian species eagles, crows, pheasants, red-breasted parakeets perceived as totems, taboos, holy birds. Findings revealed three vulture ( Gyps himalayensis, fulvus, Gypaetus barbatus ) most important because their sacred roles celestial burial. 27 bird recorded being used The high valuation culture has likely contributed to transmission knowledge regarding well conservation biodiversity study area.
